Failure to Diagnose Abdominal Infection Led to Removal of Intestines $49,250,000

PLAINTIFF ASKED $77,871,649 DEFENSE OFFER $2M to $8M high/low VERDICT $49,250,000

P laintiff underwent a gallbladder removal surgery at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He had a postop infection that progressed into full-blown sepsis and multi-organ system failure. A bowel perforation was found in a subsequent surgery and that required a total removal of the small intes- tines, most of the large intestines and a portion of the

stomach, followed by a small intestine transplant. Pltf argued the doctor failed to timely diagnose and treat the infection and sepsis. Deft contended that the initial infec- tion was related to the gallbladder infection / that pltf’s hernia was unrelated to the initial gallbladder surgery / and that the hernia necessitated the intestinal removal and transplant.
