T his case involved the first of more than 700 lawsuits against medical device sterilization company Sterigenics for emitting cancer- causing toxins into the Willowbrook surrounding community. The first case involved plaintiff Sue Ka- muda of Willowbrook, who developed and was treat- ed for breast cancer, despite no family history and a healthy lifestyle. Plaintiffs argued that Sterigenics
was aware of the health risks of the toxins they were emitting, but failed to take steps to institute better pollution controls or warn the community of the risks. The defense argued that the emission levels met state regulations and that exposure to the toxins was such a low level that it did not pose a danger to the community. The total included $38 million in compensatory and $325 million in punitive damages.
