Plaintiff Being Treated for Significant Burns Suffers Cardiac Arrest Not Guilty

PLAINTIFF ASKED $43,000,000 DEFENSE OFFER None VERDICT For the Defense

P ltf was a 40 yr-old welder who suffered burns on 45% of his body and received treatment from the burn unit at U of C Hospital. The case focused on the treatment of the burns and involved testimony from 15 doctors and experts. The attend- ing critical care physician ordered treatment including fluid resuscitation, intubation, and ventilatory man - agement. Following a change of wound dressings later that evening, pltf suffered a cardiac arrest that caused catastrophic brain injury, leaving pltf com-

pletely disabled. Pltf claimed the attending physicians prescribed inadequate fluid administration for the burns, failed to properly evaluate the plft throughout the day and failed to properly supervise residents treating pltf. The defense argued that any alleged red flags during treatment / were normal for these types of burn injuries, that the cardiac arrest was a response to the fluids that were necessary to treat the burns, and that the hospital physicians were highly trained and competent.
