I n her role as manager of litigation and claims at Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Eleni Katsoulis has overseen hundreds of cases. Her peers say that few medical malpractice specialists can match this young attorney’s commitment, intelligence and legal mind. “Eleni is hard-working, energetic and compassionate,” said Elizabeth Bruer, attorney with Chicago’s Swanson, Martin & Bell. “She works well with plaintiffs’ counsel and patients to ensure the most equitable result on behalf of all parties. Eleni is unwaveringly professional and thoughtful in her practice, while at all times maintaining her upbeat personality and generosity.” Katsoulis has been with Northwestern for 7 years, and her current position is just the latest in what has been an extremely varied career. During law school, she interned with the Department of Homeland Se- curity in immigration services. Her first job out of law school focused on insurance defense. At her next firm, Katsoulis worked on long-term care litigation defense, employment and regulatory issues and matters pending with the Illinois Department of Human Services, Equal Employment Opportunity Com- mission and Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Even more impressively? Katsoulis has thrived no matter what type of case she is handling. “Eleni has an exceptional ability to analyze complex cases and confi- dently make a determination as to whether the matter should proceed to resolution or whether the remedies of the judicial process should be sought,” said Georgia Demeros with Chicago’s Thompson Coburn LLP. Aiju Thevatheril with Swanson, Martin and Bell said that Katsoulis’ professionalism is unmatched, and that she always keeps the big picture in mind when working on a legal matter. “In her unique role as a non-litigator, she has an impact on litiga- tion with her pragmatic approach with both members of the plaintiff and defense bar,” Thevatheril said. “She also has frequent and good interactions with the judiciary during the pretrial and trial processes. Her pragmatic approach is integral with fair and expeditious resolution of litigated cases.” Eleni Kouimelis of Winston & Strawn LLP has known Katsoulis for seven years, and has worked closely with Katsoulis on a number of pro bono cases through the Hellenic Legal Assistance Services. Kouimelis said, “Eleni has had the courage to take on a wide array of pro bono cases ranging from immigration law, to elder care issues to landlord/ tenant disputes, As one example, Eleni was instrumental in assisting a family with a critically ill son to obtain the necessary visas to travel from Greece to Chicago so that the boy could receive essential medical care that saved his life.” Katsoulis holds several leadership positions in the legal community. She is chairwoman of the Hellenic Bar Association and a founding mem- ber of Hellenic Legal Assistance Services, where she provides pro bono aid to low-income members of the Greek community of Chicago. Addi- tionally, she serves on the Board of Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, where she has been honored for her pro bono work.
