C andice Kline represents debtors, creditors, and fiduciaries in out-of-court and bankruptcy proceedings and related litigation and appeals, including restructuring, business divorce situations, and liquidations. Her experience includes managing cases from $10 million to $13 billion, with key roles in large, complex Chapter 11 and 7 cases. Drawing on her past experience working in global banks and at technology start-ups, as well as her knowledge from earning an MBA, Candice relies on a combination of her strong business background and legal experience when helping companies with workout and restructuring situations. A strong mediator and negotiator, Candice is adept at guiding clients through challenging matters. Her experience in litigation in both state and federal courts includes cases involving real estate, fraud investigations, loan transactions, breach of fiduciary duty, contract disputes and collections. Over the past year she represented the independent manager of Burtonvic Capital, LLC in a complex fraud case involving over $200 million in funded debt, diverse asset recovery actions, and numerous lawsuits around the country. She represented Clear Spring Life and Annuity Company as senior lender of a $17 million mortgage-backed loan, accomplishing a paid in full exit through a restructuring process and refinancing transaction. Candice also advised manufacturer Unity Envirotech in a complex liquidation and achieved a notable result as appellate counsel to Robert Brady, Jr. concerning nondischargeability of over $2 million in business debts. While nurturing her busy practice, Candice serves as a mentor for the firm’s associates. In addition to including colleagues in
meaningful work, she helps them improve their legal writing, deepen their business development, practice their networking skills, raise their profile, and develop their own professional style — both within and outside the firm. Candice has also shown her leadership in service to numerous professional organizations. She is a board member for Lawyers for the Creative Arts and a member of DePaul University’s Institute on Business and Professional Ethics Advisory Board. She is vice chair of the Bankruptcy Section Executive Council and a Board of Governors member at the Commercial Law League of America. For the Illinois State Bar Association, Candice serves as ex-officio chair of the Business Advice and Financial Planning Section Council and as former chair and ex-officio chair of the Business and Securities Law Section Council. She is a former director and officer of the Turnaround Management Association Chicago/Midwest Chapter and recently served as an instructor for TMA Restructuring Bootcamp. In addition, Candice is a member of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees International Committee, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the American Bar Association and local bar associations. In the fall of 2023, she also served as an adjunct professor of business bankruptcy law for Toledo College of Law. In recognition of her leadership, Candice was named one of “America’s Leading Lawyers in Bankruptcy/Restructuring” by Chambers USA in 2023. She was included in Crain’s Chicago Business’ 2022 “Notable Gen X Leaders in Law” list and awarded the 2020 and 2023 “Pro Bono Transaction of the Year” by the Turnaround Management Association Chicago/Midwest Chapter.
