J ulianne Hartzell is a litigation partner and chair of the firm’s medical device practice at Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP. She is a trial lawyer handling intellectual property cases, including cases involving patent, trademark, copyright and trade secrets. Julianne is also a mediator, serving on the International Trademark Association mediator’s panel and as a Lanham Act Mediator in the Northern District of Illinois. Julianne is a strategic litigator with excellent courtroom instincts who thinks quickly on her feet. Julianne led the damages case in the first patent-infringement jury trial about a biosimilar under the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act, resulting in an $80 million judgment awarded that was affirmed on appeal. In another jury trial, Julianne and her team successfully defended a small business against more than a hundred trademark and copyright infringement allegations, preventing the attempted shutdown of the business by a much bigger intellectual property owner. Grateful for the mentoring and sponsorship she received, Julianne makes it a priority to support the professional development of other women attorneys and to help them achieve their career goals. She currently serves as the co-chair of the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law National Board of Directors and previously was president of the Chicago chapter. She is also helping plan the 2021 ChIPS Global Summit — the largest event for an organization dedicated to advancing and connecting women in technology, law, and policy. She is active in Chicago Women in IP and frequently mentors associates working in IP. She is an adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law. She is a frequent speaker on substantive intellectual property and litigation topics and as an advocate for women in the legal profession. Julianne is proud to serve on the board of the Richard Linn American Inn of Court and as vice chair of the Intellectual Property Owners Association’s Damages and Injunctions Committee. Pro bono work is also important to Julianne. She is on the board of Lawyers for the Creative Arts, where she has volunteered since 2005 representing artists, musicians, authors, and small business owners. As a member of her firm’s pro bono committee, she helped to develop its pro bono policy. Julianne has been recognized for her work by clients as well as industry and legal organizations. She is included on the Top 50 Women and the Top 100 lists in Illinois by Super Lawyers, and the National Law Journal Litigation Trailblazers and Pioneers list; named a “Life Sciences Star” in LMG Life Sciences, an “IP Star” in Managing IP’s IP Stars Survey, and Law Bulletin Media’s 40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty To Watch. She has been awarded The Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law Inspiration Award and The Chicago Bar Association’s Alliance for Women’s prestigious Alta May Hulett Award. Julianne graduated from Duke University with dual degrees in mechanical and biomedical engineering. Her J.D. is from the University of Michigan Law School. Julianne serves as a director for her family’s long-standing businesses, Hartzell Air Movement and Hartzell Hardwoods. Outside of work, Julianne enjoys photography, hiking, and playing tennis, volleyball, and floor hockey.
